My Side: About Us

Ok, now it's my (Kathy) turn.

I'm a mumbldy-mumble year old mother of two teenagers. In my first life, before kids, I was a software support person at a local university, then a research programmer at a local major employer. So, a geek/nerd/dork. I grew up the daughter of an audiophile-ish dad, and a music loving mom, so I was familiar with both good sound, and great "trickle-down" electronics when dad wanted an upgrade. (Thanks, Dad!)

Life number two was as an over-educated stay-at-home mom with Bose 901 speakers (hand-me-downs) and a mix of Adcom components from my college dorm (Thanks again, Dad), a CD player, and a Sony surround-in-a-box. My then-husband didn't care too much about quality of sound, more about ease of wiring, and good sounding movies.
Early Disastrous Experiments in Tri-phonic sound

Fast forward to 2007/08 and life number three. That marriage dissolved, the kids now had two homes, I went back to school for my MS in Education, and I met Brent. Yes it was online. No, we didn't intend to date. Yes, it was an instant attraction. Don't ask. The story is funny, but probably only to us and those who love us. Brent gained a teenage girl and boy, and a new title (Faux-daddy), and I gained a step-poodle who loved music, and a kick-ass stereo.

I will state right now, at the start of this, that I am a skeptic in the world of audiophiles. Up to a point, I will agree that you get what you pay for, however high-priced cables were lost on me. Unfortunately, I also have to admit that Brent was pretty spot-on with the penny story. Yes, I did say "fuck a duck" and yes, I did shake my head and return to making dinner while mumbling something a lot like "gosh-darn pennies." Of course, whenever I pooh-pooh some odd suggestion that Brent makes about our system, like spending said large sums of money on cables, he brings up those ducky pennies. On the plus side, I am a reliable devil's advocate in our audiophile adventure.

And for the record... I hate Kool Aid.

  1. Too funny. We can safely tell Kathy and Bos that what they gave in their DNA, they also got in marriages of their children. A sense of humor and some writing talent. Bring it on!
